Sphere Las Vegas
General Coatings Manufacturing worked with NRCA member Commercial Roofers Inc., Las Vegas, to bring an innovative roof solution to Madison Square Garden Co.’s design team. The decision was made to use spray foam instead of an insulated PVC membrane—specifically, 5-inch Ultra-Thane 230 roof foam and General Coating Manufacturing’s unique formula of Ultra-Flex 1000 acrylic coating— to insulate and weatherproof the $2 billion project.
“What may not be realized by many is the fact that The Sphere would not have been made possible without being equipped with a proper roofing system. Commercial Roofers, Inc. a 25-year-old company, was tasked with finding a solution to properly insulate and protect a structure of this size and magnitude. Their answer – spray foam insulation. Commercial Roofers knew that utilizing spray foam for this project would not only eliminate any material loading issues but would also reduce material waste, especially important given the national material shortage at the time of construction. Working alongside General Coating Manufacturing Corp., crews were able to successfully complete this gargantuan task.”

The commercial roofer’s crew installed five inches of General Coatings Ultra-Thane 230 spray foam.
Following the application of this two-component closed-cell foam, an additional crew followed behind to apply the Ultra-Flex 1000 elastomeric basecoat and topcoat at 5 gallons per square foot to finish at 40 dry mils. At the bottom of the Sphere is a wide tension ring. The SPF needed to be applied in a way to create a positive water flow to the drains within the valley, the high points, the crickets, and the tapers all being important. General Coatings provided support during the installation by positioning their technical team on-site to observe and answer any questions when needed. A special formula was created for the top coating – a slate grey colour that would allow visitors to look at the LED monitors and not see the roof behind it, making it appear as if the roof had vanished.
